Yes, Brian - I think this is a common theme that many go through. As I was researching this piece, you'd be surprised how many people feel the same sense of wander...I think though, at some point, we all find what we're looking for (not to sound too much like a U2 song or anything).

Bill - thank you for the incredible comment. You are so right about the writer's journey. Keep writing as well!

This is such a wonderful piece Dana. I remember you quite well from high school, and you were always so put together. You had incredible drive and focus to go and make yourself into what it was that you wanted to be.

I am not sure you should be so hard on yourself though. Most writers must drink themselves into oblivion, have 4 or 5 marriages, and put in their will that they want to be shot from a cannon by Johnny Depp upon their passing.

Thank goodness you are no Hemmingway, or Hunter S. Thompson. You are you, and you speak with a voice that seems to be able to match the exact tone that is needed to capture whom or what you are writing about. That sort of voice comes from the years of forced adaptability that can only come from being a military brat.

You say you were lost. I say you were taking the journey that all serious writers have to take to be able to mature and connect with the audience they are writing for. I wish I could have seen you in your less "reserved" moments.

Regrettably, I was one of those kids you wrote about that left. In fact I left the day after graduation on a bicycle and rode across the country. I had my own journey to make, and my own voice to find.

That entry made me cry. Not sure why but I am sure it has to do with those feelings of being lost and then finding yourself again.
