Dublin is one of my favorite cities. And just because it’s fun to live vicariously through others, this week’s travel piece is a postcard of sorts. My dear friend is celebrating a birthday, so as an early gift, she and her husband enjoyed the sights and sounds of Dublin, Ireland.
Oh, and did I mention they attended one of the three U2 shows in Croke Park Stadium? A fantastic birthday present, indeed.
Since in today’s tech age the physical postcard has now been altered to text messaging, here’s the abbreviated summary with photos…
Bain sult as! (English translation from Gaelic-enjoy!)
Just landed at 7am and no time for a nap-straight to the Guinness Brewery for a tour and Beef and Guinness Stew. And U2 is blasting all over the city!
We rounded the corner to satisfy my craving for Chinese, when we stumbled upon one of our fave sushi concepts-conveyor belt sushi! Much deliciousness was consumed.
Since it is U2 day, we’re taking a pilgramage of sorts-here are the crowds waiting outside The Clarence Hotel- a really cool hotel on the edge of Temple Bar, owned by the boys in the band. And the limo they’re surrounding is a decoy, but I didn’t have the heart to tell them.
On the way to the show, we stopped at Windmill Lane-home of the studio U2 used during the 80’s, and where fans from all over the world stop to leave well wishes graffiti’d on the wall. Since the show is this weekend, there are a ton of brand new messages.
One of the many messages.
A typical pre-show snack before heading to the stadium-including the only beer to ever make me cry.
At last it’s showtime! Here all the crowds are filling in.
The show in full swing!
Today took us outside the city to a small town called Howth on Dublin Harbour. Every Sunday is a fresh farmer’s market with fruit and vegetables, baked goods, and handmade soaps.
Fresh breads and desserts.
Fishing nets ready for the boats.
Even the seals are hungry!
The best traditional fish n chips-and right by the water.
A pint of cider and for some reason, the best tasting Guinness in all of Ireland-and only here would you find it all at a place called “The Cock Tavern.”
Next to eat on our day in Howth was this-freshly caught oysters from the local shore-served shot style with beetroot, nam jim, and lastly, a ponzu. Topped with a glass of prosecco and today is good!
